The 5 Best Tips to Keep Your Box Braids Looking Fresh

eventsimg

Box braids, also known as cornrows, are one of the most popular forms of hairstyles that lasts well over two months. But it’s definitely not difficult to make them last even longer than that! In fact, with these five top tips, you can keep your box braids looking fresh and new even after three months or more! Below are the five tips you should follow to make sure you get the longest wear out of your box braids.

1) Wear Them Often

Wearing your braids often is a good way to maintain freshness in your new style. However, you should be very careful of how you handle them when washing and styling; that’s why we recommend using brushes and combs made specifically for braided hair (they have longer teeth for more gentle brushing). We suggest washing your braided wigs about once every week, but some women prefer doing it even less often. Still, make sure that you keep a wig cap on your scalp while sleeping to protect it from dandruff, oil buildup and sweat. And try not to sit on your hair—just use pillows or cushions.

2) Moisturize Your Hair Often

It’s important to remember that your braids are also an extension of your natural hair. They will absorb as much moisture from your hair as possible, and braids that are well moisturized look better than those that aren’t. In fact, freshly moisturized braids can even last a few weeks longer than dry ones. Because braided wigs often have a lot of volume, they don’t need any additional styling products in order to keep them looking great. You only need water and a good leave-in conditioner or oil.

3) Use a Spray Bottle on Your Braids

Using a spray bottle on your braids before going out is an easy way to keep them looking fresh for weeks. When you get home, give your braids a good rinsing and your hair will thank you with shiny, healthy-looking tresses. The one thing to remember with braided wig is that they can be a little tricky when it comes to cleaning because you have a cap on one side of each braid, which makes it hard for water or shampoo/conditioner/styling products to penetrate all of your hair. But if you keep up with rinsing and cleanse regularly, they’ll look great for months. We’ve tried plenty of tips here at Spring Fed Life and found these five very useful in our routine.

4) Don’t Wash With Water That Is Too Hot

As tempting as it may be, avoid washing your hair with water that is too hot. You should be using water that is between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit, as anything above can really damage your box braids. Even if you’re not trying to maintain box braids, you should still use a shower cap when washing your hair. This can protect your natural hair from being exposed to any damage from too much heat or shampoo. Additionally, remember that conditioner isn’t just for conditioning—you need it to remove any buildup of oils on your scalp before it has a chance to make its way into your braids. This will keep them looking fresher for longer!

5) Only Get Them Professionally Done If You Can Afford It

While some women do have box braids done in their own homes, it’s important that you only consider doing so if you can afford it. A professional stylist will ensure that your hair is healthy and manageable. Without paying for these services, there’s no way of knowing whether or not your box braids are put in properly—which could lead to unnecessary breakage and frustration later on. If your budget doesn’t allow for a professional stylist, don’t try to DIY your hair—it won’t turn out well! Consider Purchasing a Silk Pillowcase: A silk pillowcase helps prevent friction between your scalp and hair while you sleep.
